What’s your design style?

I am lost when it comes to my decor style. I kind of operate under the philosophy of filling my house with things I love guided by a general color scheme and style. But don’t ask me to define that style.

When Andrew and I first got married, I would’ve described my ideal decor style as modern. Funny how things can change so much in just a few years. Now I know my style isn’t “modern” at all. But, I’m still torn by what style I really want. I know I can’t have it all, but I like several different styles including contemporary, some aspects of french country, and cottage chic.

Andrew decided our style would be called “modern french country”, but over the last few months I’ve figured out that I want to add in a little more contemporary, too. So far I’m still not sure how it will all tie together (or if it even will), so I decided to take some style quizzes to see if I could gain any insight into our decor style.

First I took the Ethan Allen “What’s your signature?” quiz.

The quiz gives you two pictures and you choose the one that speaks to you the most.

This quiz had fun pictures, but c’mon Ethan Allen. Not helpful. The descriptions were full of flowery words, but really didn’t mean anything to me. I like concrete descriptions, none of that artsy fartsy feel-good stuff. Also, I took the quiz several times and I think I got almost every style (elegance, romance, vintage, and explorer). To be fair, though, I got elegance the most.

After you find your signature style, it shows you example rooms in that style. Again, not sure it’s all that helpful cause the example pictures vary a lot. This was one of the “elegance lifestyle” pictures.

I like certain elements, but as a whole it’s just too traditional and colorless for me. The next picture is also “elegance”, but looks much more contemporary than the first room. I like this one better, but it leans a little too contemporary and matchy-matchy for me.

Feeling just as confused after this quiz as before, I decided to find another one. I took the Design Style quiz from Better Homes and Gardens. Unlike the Ethan Allen quiz, this one gave you the same sets of images each time. I was pretty certain on most of them, but how am I supposed to choose just one of these houses?! I would die to have any of them!

Depending on my answers I got Country French or Polished Casual. While I like aspects of the french country style, all of it together is a bit stuffy and busy for my taste.

But I think polished casual might be about right.

I do like to mix and match from different styles, and while I like a crisp, fresh look, I definitely want everything in my house to be comfortable and live-able.

I feel like this slightly validated the style I’m going for, but as for labeling my style, I’m still pretty confused. Polished casual? Contemporary cottage? Modern french country? How about polished, casual, contemporary french cottage? Yeah, I guess not…that’s a mouthful. But at least I’ve narrowed it down a little. 🙂 So what’s your design style?

Just wanted to say that I love reading your blog! You remind me a bit of Young House Love! 🙂 Love what you’ve done with the new house so far and am excited to watch what else you will do! I’d have to say that my “style” (which to me means things I drool over and dream about but we’re not real good at DIY-ing or decorating…haha) would have to be cabin-y, farmhouse-y, cozy and comfortable. Are any of those real styles? 🙂

Aw thanks, Valerie! And YHL is one of my favorite blogs! Any time I’m not sure how to do something or just want extra instructions I look there cause they’re bound to have something related!

Not sure I’m great at decorating either, but I enjoy it so I try my best! And if my “style” can be 5 words long, then cabin-y, farmhouse-y, cozy and comfortable is definitely a style! 🙂
